Client Chronicles

Harry Colon

Underground Sounds and Variety, York
$10,000 loan

GROWING UP IN THE BRONX DURING THE DAWNING AGE OF HIP-HOP INSTILLED AN INSPIRING LOVE OF MUSIC IN HARRY COLON. Since opening Underground Sound
and Variety in 1997, Harry has expanded his business from selling original vinyl and cassette tapes to now offering everything from popular custom baseball caps to providing DJ entertainment services.

A believer in keeping his business up to date with the times, Harry sought a loan from Community First Fund in 2006 to begin carrying a line of New Era baseball caps. Today, those hats account for 40% of Underground Sounds income, evidence of Harrys ability to spot the newest trends in his community.

In recent years Harrys sons have taken on greater responsibility at the store, leaving him with some newfound free-time. Harry gives his time back to the community in many different ways, from reading to children at the local library to hosting a cookout to benefit the Community Progress Council. Harry attributes the success of Underground Sound to the support of the community, and he chooses to express his gratitude by giving back with his time and energy.
